🔑 The single most important thing

The price you see is NOT what you'll really pay.

Korean rental cars use a "deductible" system. Even with insurance, you can owe ₩500,000–₩1,000,000 if anything goes wrong.

The base car price matters less than:

  1. 💰 Your deductible amount (how much YOU pay if there's damage)
  2. 🛡️ Whether your insurance reduces it to ₩0

1) Typical rental prices in Korea 💵

These are 2026 estimates for a 3-day rental with basic insurance included. Prices vary by season, company, and location.

Vehicle type Example cars 3-day price range
🚗 EconomyKia Morning, Hyundai Casper₩80,000–₩150,000
🚙 CompactKia K3, Hyundai Avante₩100,000–₩180,000
🚐 Mid-size SUVKia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson₩150,000–₩250,000
🚙 Large SUVKia Sorento, Hyundai Palisade₩250,000–₩400,000
🚐 Van / MinivanKia Carnival, Hyundai Starex₩200,000–₩350,000

⚠️ With a foreign license + IDP, you cannot drive commercial vehicles (buses, taxis, trucks). Standard rental cars are allowed.

🔗 Confused about IDP categories? 👉 [See "What documents do I need?" — IDP categories]

📉 Prices are usually LOWER if:

  • 📅 You book 2–4 weeks in advance
  • ⏰ You rent for 7+ days
  • 🗓️ You avoid weekends and Korean holidays

📈 Prices are usually HIGHER if:

  • ⚡ You book just before pickup
  • 🌸 You travel during summer, Chuseok (추석), or Lunar New Year
  • 🚙 You choose large SUVs or vans
  • 🛡️ You add Full CDW + many extras

Most online prices already include:

🛡️ Liability insurance

This pays for damage or injury to other people or property when you cause an accident.

🛡️ Basic Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)

This protects against damage to the rental car itself.

⚠️ But Basic CDW has a HIGH deductible — typically ₩500,000–₩1,000,000. (More on this in Section 4.)

💰 Taxes and standard fees

Local taxes and basic service fees are usually included in the online price.

⚠️ The catch

"Insurance included" does NOT mean "you pay ₩0 if there's damage."

It means you pay up to the deductible amount.

3) What's NOT included — common extras 💸

The first price you see is rarely the final price. Common add-ons:

🛡️ Full CDW (Super Cover)

  • 💰 Reduces your deductible to ₩0 in normal accidents
  • 💵 Adds about ₩20,000–₩50,000 per day
  • ❌ Doesn't cover intentional damage or illegal driving

🛞 Tire & glass protection

  • Covers damage to tires and windshield
  • 💵 About ₩10,000–₩20,000 per day

🚑 Personal Accident Insurance (PAI)

  • Covers injury or death of driver and passengers
  • 💵 About ₩10,000–₩20,000 per day
  • 👉 Often already covered by your travel insurance — check first

👥 Extra driver fee

  • Some companies charge extra if 2+ people will drive

📍 GPS / navigation unit

  • 👉 Less needed now since most people use phone maps (Naver Map, Kakao Navi)
  • Some companies still charge a small fee

🔗 Which navigation app to use? 👉 [See our Naver Map guide]

When booking, always check:

  • ✅ Which items are marked "included"
  • ⚠️ Which are marked "optional" or "add-on"
  • 💵 Daily prices for each add-on

4) The single most important number: 🎯 Your deductible

This is the #1 thing foreigners miss when renting cars in Korea.

What "deductible" means

💡 Deductible = the maximum amount YOU must pay yourself if the car is damaged.

Example scenario

You hit a pole and the repair costs ₩2,000,000:

Insurance level What you pay
Basic CDW (deductible ₩1,000,000)₩1,000,000 out of pocket
Full CDW (deductible ₩0)₩0 out of pocket

→ Same accident. Different outcome based on insurance level.

Korean rental terms (you'll see these on websites)

Korean English What it means
자차 (jacha)Self-insuranceBasic CDW
완전자차 (wanjeon-jacha)Full self-insuranceFull CDW (₩0 deductible)
슈퍼자차 (super-jacha)Super self-insurancePremium full CDW
면책금 (myeonchaek-geum)DeductibleWhat YOU pay if damaged
고객부담금 (gogaek-budamgeum)Customer chargeSame as deductible
휴차보상료 (hyucha-bosangryo)Loss-of-use feeCharged for days the car can't be rented

What basic CDW often EXCLUDES

⚠️ Even with "basic CDW", you may still pay for:

  • 🛞 Tire damage
  • 🪟 Windshield damage
  • 🚗 Single-vehicle accidents (no other car involved)
  • 📅 Loss-of-use compensation (휴차보상료) while car is being repaired

👉 "Basic CDW" ≠ peace of mind. Always check the deductible amount and exclusions.

5) Full CDW: when is it worth it? 🛡️

✅ Full CDW is a good idea if:

  • 🆕 It's your first time driving in Korea
  • 😰 You feel nervous about Korean roads or tight parking
  • 💼 You're renting an expensive car (large SUV, van, luxury)
  • 🏝️ You're driving in an unfamiliar area (like Jeju)
  • 🧘 You want to avoid stress if anything goes wrong

In these cases, paying ₩20,000–₩50,000/day extra removes most of your risk.

🟡 Full CDW MAY not be needed if:

  • 💳 You have strong credit card rental insurance, AND
  • 🌍 You have travel insurance that explicitly covers rental cars in Korea, AND
  • 📋 You have written confirmation of the coverage

⚠️ Warning: Many credit cards say "rental car insurance included" but exclude Korea or have hidden conditions. If you're not 100% sure → treat it as NOT covered → buy Full CDW.

🤔 How to verify your existing coverage

Before relying on credit card or travel insurance:

  1. 📞 Call your card/insurance provider
  2. ❓ Ask: "Does my rental car insurance cover South Korea?"
  3. ❓ Ask: "What's my deductible if the car is damaged?"
  4. ❓ Ask: "Are tires, windshields, and single-vehicle accidents covered?"
  5. 📧 Get the answer in writing (email)

👉 Never guess with insurance. A surprise ₩2,000,000 charge ruins any savings.

6) Quick choice — which insurance should you pick? 🎯

Your situation Recommended Daily extra cost
🆕 First time in Korea / nervousFull CDW (Super Cover)+₩20,000–50,000
💪 Confident driver, accept riskBasic CDW only+₩0
💳 Strong credit card / travel insurance (verified)Basic CDW+₩0
❓ Not 100% sure about your coverageFull CDW (be safe)+₩20,000–50,000

🎯 Bottom line: When in doubt, go with Full CDW. The extra cost (~$15-40/day) is much smaller than a potential ₩1,000,000+ repair bill.

7) Costs you still pay — even with Full CDW 💸

Insurance only covers damage to the car and other people. You still pay for:

🚙 Operating costs

  • ⛽ Fuel (gasoline, diesel, LPG, electricity)
  • 🛣️ Highway tolls (Hi-Pass)
  • 🅿️ Parking fees

⚠️ Penalties

  • 🚨 Traffic fines (speeding, illegal parking, school zones)
  • 📷 Camera-detected violations

🔴 Insurance void (you pay 100%)

  • 🍺 Drunk driving damage
  • 🪪 Driving without proper documents
  • 🏁 Racing, off-road driving, prohibited areas
  • 👥 Accidents while an unregistered driver was driving

📋 Return-related fees

  • ⛽ Returning with less fuel than required (full-to-full policy)
  • Late returns
  • 🚭 Smoking in a non-smoking car (cleaning fee)
  • 🔑 Lost key
  • 🛣️ Lost or damaged Hi-Pass device

8) Jeju Island — different prices, same rules 🏝️

Jeju is the most popular place in Korea to rent a car. The pricing structure is a bit different.

💵 Jeju prices

Company type Daily rate Notes
Local Jeju companies₩30,000–₩50,000Economy cars, basic insurance
National brands (Lotte, SK, etc.)₩70,000–₩100,000Newer cars, better support

Prices vary widely by:

  • 🌸 Season (summer & holidays = much higher)
  • 📅 How early you book
  • 🚗 Car type & insurance level

⚠️ Jeju pricing trap

📉 Base car price looks CHEAP.📈 After adding insurance, the real cost is much higher.

The gap between basic 자차 and 완전자차 is usually larger in Jeju than mainland.

✅ Same legal rules apply

Even at cheaper Jeju shops, you still need:

  • 🪪 Original home-country driver's license
  • 🌐 IDP (Geneva or Vienna Convention country)
  • 📘 Passport with Korea entry stamp

And Korean traffic laws apply equally.

🔗 Check your country status: 👉 [See "Can I Drive in Korea?"]

🚨 Jeju warning: don't fall for "no IDP needed"

Some local Jeju shops may say:

🗣️ "You can drive with just an English license."🗣️ "No IDP needed."

⚠️ This is FALSE under Korean law.

If you drive on this advice and have an accident:

  • ❌ Insurance may be void
  • ❌ Treated as unlicensed driving
  • ⚖️ Fine: up to ₩3,000,000 + possible criminal charges

👉 Trust Korean government sources, not one cheap rental shop.

💡 Jeju has no toll roads

Unlike mainland Korea, Jeju has no expressway tolls. So no Hi-Pass needed there.

🌐 Language support in Jeju

  • 🏢 National brands (Lotte, SK, Hertz, Avis): English support, clear contracts
  • 🏪 Local Jeju shops: often Korean-only websites and staff, contracts may be unclear

🎯 Jeju strategy for foreigners

If your priority is... Recommended choice
💰 Lowest price + you understand some KoreanLocal Jeju company OK
🛡️ Safety, clear communication, supportNational/global brand
You're unsureNational brand (worth the extra cost)

9) Pre-booking checklist ✅

Before confirming your booking, check:

💵 Total price

  • ☐ Is the price shown per day or for the whole trip?
  • ☐ Are taxes and fees included?

🛡️ Basic insurance

  • ☐ Does the price include liability insurance (other people)?
  • ☐ Does it include basic CDW (the car)?
  • ☐ What's the deductible amount?

🛡️ Full CDW

  • ☐ How much extra per day for Full CDW?
  • ☐ Does it reduce the deductible to ₩0?
  • ☐ Are tires, windshield, single-vehicle accidents included?
  • ☐ Is loss-of-use compensation (휴차보상료) included?

💳 Other coverage

  • ☐ Do I have travel insurance that already covers some of these?
  • ☐ Do I have credit card rental insurance verified for Korea?

🏝️ Location

  • ☐ Am I renting in Jeju or mainland?
  • Local company or national brand?

10) Questions to ask the rental company 💬

If anything is unclear, ask in simple English:

🗣️ Essential questions

  1. "What insurance is included in this price?"
  2. "What's my maximum deductible if the car is damaged?"
  3. "Is there a ₩0 deductible option?"
  4. "Are there any other mandatory fees?"
  5. "Are tires and windshield damage covered?"
  6. "Is loss-of-use (hyucha-bosangryo) compensation included?"

⚠️ If answers are vague

If the staff can't clearly answer these questions:

  • 🚨 Reconsider that booking
  • 🏢 Try a national brand instead
  • 📋 Get clarification in writing before paying

👉 Clear answers = trustworthy company. Vague answers = risk.

🎯 One-line takeaway

Korean rental cars: the base car price matters less than the insurance level and deductible amount.

Always know "How much will I pay if the car is damaged?" — before you book.

📊 Quick summary

  • 💰 Base prices are often misleading — check total cost with full insurance
  • 🛡️ Basic CDW = deductible ₩500,000–₩1,000,000 (you pay this if damaged)
  • 🛡️ Full CDW = ₩0 deductible (worth it for most foreign drivers)
  • ⛽ Insurance ≠ free fuel, tolls, parking, or fines (you still pay these)
  • 🏝️ Jeju cars look cheap but legal rules are the same — never skip IDP
  • 💬 If a company can't clearly answer insurance questions → pick a different one
