What Is an IDP for Driving in Korea?

If you want to drive in Korea with your foreign license,

you will see one word everywhere: IDP.

Many people buy the wrong IDP.

Some people even buy a fake one.

Let’s make it simple and clear.

What is an IDP?

An International Driving Permit (IDP) is a translation of your driver's license.

It helps police and rental car staff in other countries read your license.

It does NOT replace your original license.

In Korea, you must carry both:

  • your home-country license, and
  • your IDP.

A real IDP is usually:

What it looks like:

  • Paper booklet (10–15 pages)
  • Multiple languages
  • Your photo and license information
  • Official stamp from your country

If your “IDP” does not look like this,

you should check it very carefully.

What it is NOT

An IDP is not:

  • ❌ Not a plastic card
  • ❌ Not a license by itself
  • ❌ Not valid without your original license

If you show only an IDP in Korea,

the police can treat you as driving without a license.

Always remember:

IDP = translation

License = real permission

You need both when you drive in Korea.

Common Mistakes (Avoid These)

Now, let’s look at the most common mistakes about IDPs.

Many foreign drivers make these mistakes before they come to Korea.

Mistake 1: Buying a fake IDP

Red flags:

  • It is a plastic card
  • It is issued instantly online with no checks
  • The price is very high (around $50–$150)

Real IDPs are paper booklets from official sources such as:

  • your government office, or
  • your national automobile association.

If you are not sure, ask them:

“Is this an official IDP that I can use to drive in South Korea?”

Mistake 2: Thinking English is enough

Some drivers think:

“My license is in English. I do not need an IDP.”

This is wrong.

Even if your license is in English,

Korean law still requires an IDP + your license for short-term driving.

So:

  • English-only license = not enough
  • English license + IDP = OK for driving in Korea (if all other rules are met)

Mistake 3: Applying too late

An IDP is not always instant.

Some countries take 1–3 weeks to process your IDP.

In busy seasons, it can be slower.

Apply 4–6 weeks before travel.

This gives you time in case:

  • documents are missing, or
  • there is a delay.

Do not wait until the week before your flight.

Mistake 4: Forgetting your original license

Remember:

IDP alone is not enough.

In Korea, the police will check:

  • your original driver’s license, and
  • your IDP, and
  • your passport.

If you carry only your IDP,

it is the same as having no valid license.

Always pack your real license in your passport wallet.

Mistake 5: Not checking expiry dates

Both your license and your IDP must be valid.

Before you travel to Korea, check:

  • Is my driver’s license still valid for my whole trip?
  • Is my IDP valid for my whole trip?

If one expires during your stay,

you may suddenly be driving illegally.

Before you book a car in Korea

Now you know what a real IDP is

and the common mistakes to avoid.

Before you rent a car or drive in Korea, make sure:

  • You have a real paper IDP from an official source
  • You carry your original license + IDP + passport together
  • All of them are valid for your full stay in Korea

In the next guide, we will show you

how to check which IDP is correct for your country

and what to do if your country does not issue a valid IDP for Korea.
