Naver map Guide

Why Naver Map?

📌 At a glance

Naver Map is the most reliable navigation app for driving in Korea. It supports 4 languages (text), gives the most accurate arrival times, and has the richest local info. This note covers:

  1. Why Naver Map (and when to use Kakao Navi or TMAP instead)
  2. App download & setup
  3. How search works in Korea (addresses, phone numbers)
  4. Route search in real life (parking, EV charging, tolls)
  5. In-app examples (cameras, parking, rest stops, etc.)
  6. Full setup walkthrough (for first-time users)

1) Why Naver Map?

🌐 Language support

  • Text: English, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified & Traditional) — 4 languages.
  • Voice navigation: English only. If you set the app to Japanese or Chinese, voice guidance still plays in Korean.
  • 👉 Naver also runs Papago, one of Korea's best translation services — handy when reading Korean reviews or signs.

🗺️ All-in-one travel guide

  • Massive amount of local reviews — old and recent.
  • Multiple review types: receipt-verified reviews, blog reviews, star ratings. You can cross-check to spot fake or paid reviews.
  • Search nearby parking lots, gas stations, and even public toilets.
  • Naver is Korea's most-used portal, so it has far more local info than Google Maps.
  • 👉 Note: Most reviews are still in Korean. Use your phone's translation feature or Papago to read them.

⏱️ Most accurate arrival time

  • Naver is known for the most stable and accurate ETA in Korea.
  • You can check expected travel times by hour.
  • Real-time traffic via live CCTV — you can actually see the road before you drive.
  • Public transit also has a "get-off alert" so you don't miss your stop.

❓ Why not Google Maps?

  • Korea restricts exporting high-precision map data for national security reasons.
  • Because of this, Google Maps in Korea has been less accurate and less updated than local apps.
  • 👉 Update (Feb 2026): Korea approved high-precision map data export to Google for the first time in ~20 years. Google Maps will improve over time. But Korean businesses still register on Naver, not Google — so reviews, menus, hours, and photos still live on Naver. For driving in Korea, Naver Map is still the safer choice.

🟡 When Kakao Navi might be better

  • English support
  • Use Kakao Pay for in-app payment
  • Driving an EV (better charging info)
  • Want traffic light info shown inside navigation

🟠 When TMAP might be better

  • English support
  • Korea's most-used navigation app (longest history)
  • Strong route variety + real-time traffic → often finds the fastest route
  • Best real-time parking availability (unmanned lots like ADT Caps + Seoul public lots)
  • Most accurate gas station price info
  • In-app car management + driving score (can lead to car insurance discounts)
  • ⚠️ Weak for buses and subway. Language support is limited.

2) App download & setup (quick version — full guide at the bottom)

First steps

  • Download NAVER Map from the App Store or Google Play.
  • You can use it without logging in.
  • 👉 Logging in unlocks: bookmarks, recent history, and personalized features. Helpful for longer trips.

Basic settings to check

  • App language + voice guidance language
  • Voice volume and alert types
  • Set car route as default (instead of transit)
  • Speed/camera alerts: keep them ON

⚠️ Why you should keep camera alerts ON

  • Korea has a lot of speed cameras, and the number keeps growing.
  • School zones (어린이보호구역) are strictly enforced — fines and penalties are higher.
  • Since the recent expansion of camera enforcement, foreign drivers often get hit with fines they only discover when returning the rental car.
  • 👉 If it's your first time driving in Korea, keep both voice alerts and camera alerts ON.

🏠 Korean address system

Korea uses two address systems at the same time:

  • Road name address (도로명주소): road name + building numberExample: 123 Teheran-ro, Gangnam-gu, Seoul
  • Lot number address (지번주소): district name + lot numberExample: Yeoksam-dong 736-1, Gangnam-gu, Seoul

👉 Don't worry if your reservation confirmation and the receipt show different formats — both work. You can paste either one into Naver Map.

📞 Korean phone numbers

  • Landline: area code + number (e.g., 02-1234-5678 for Seoul)
  • Mobile: starts with 010 (e.g., 010-1234-5678)
  • From abroad: add +82 and drop the first 0.

🔍 Best search order (easiest to hardest)

  1. Phone number ← easiest, almost always works
  2. Place name in Korean
  3. Road name address
  4. Lot number address
  5. Place name in English ← least reliable. Even Koreans struggle with this.

👉 Pro tip: Find the place on Instagram, a blog, or the hotel website first. Copy the Korean name or phone number, then paste it into Naver Map. This works much better than typing in English.

4) Route search in real life

🅿️ Check parking BEFORE the destination

  • Naver Map auto-routes you to the building's parking lot if it has one.
  • If the building has no parking lot, the app will NOT automatically suggest a nearby public/private lot.
  • In that case, search for a nearby parking lot manually before you leave.

Where parking is hard:

  • Downtown / shopping districts
  • Tourist areas
  • Hospitals
  • Traditional markets

👉 In these areas, always search the destination AND a parking lot together before driving.

Parking info by app

App Strength
Naver MapLocation, fees, booking info — but live availability is limited
Kakao NaviAI "full lot" prediction, booking & payment, some real-time availability
TMAPStrongest live availability for unmanned lots (ADT Caps, etc.) and Seoul public lots

🔌 EV drivers — search charging stations too

Before a long drive, check:

  • Charging station location
  • Whether it's operating
  • Whether it offers fast charging

🛣️ Choosing your route — what matters?

Before you leave, decide what to prioritize:

  • Fastest arrival — when you must get there ASAP
  • 💰 Lowest tolls — pick "free roads first" or "highway first"
  • 🚗 Real-time traffic — accept a small detour to avoid jams
  • 📍 Add stops (waypoints) if needed

5) Real examples (screenshots)

  • Reading remaining distance
  • Speed / camera alerts
  • Finding parking
  • Finding gas / EV charging stations
  • Live traffic via CCTV
  • Nearby restaurants, hotels, attractions
  • Finding restrooms
  • Highway rest stop info
